Bangladesh has assumed the chairmanship of BIMSTEC for the next two years. The goal of this alliance is to enhance regional connectivity, economic cooperation, and development across South and Southeast Asia.
Chief Advisor of the Bangladesh government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, joined BIMSTEC leaders at the sixth BIMSTEC summit held in Bangkok, Thailand on Friday, April 4th. The leaders of the BIMSTEC member states unanimously adopted the Bangkok Declaration and the BIMSTEC Bangkok Vision, which is a strategic roadmap. It will guide the organization towards sustainable development and deeper economic integration, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Chief Advisor highlighted Bangladesh's vision and priorities for BIMSTEC in his speech. Reaffirming his government's steadfast commitment, he assured that Bangladesh remains unwavering in upholding the constitutional rights of all its citizens.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reported that Dr. Muhammad Yunus emphasized the urgent need to implement the BIMSTEC Framework Agreement on Free Trade Area (FTA) and stressed the importance of implementing the BIMSTEC Master Plan on Transport Connectivity. He urged BIMSTEC to take more visible and active steps to engage Myanmar in establishing stability in the Rakhine State, in order to create a conducive environment for the return of forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their homeland.
After receiving the chairmanship from the Prime Minister of Thailand, the Chief Advisor issued a statement acknowledging an inclusive and action-oriented BIMSTEC.
Earlier in the morning, the Chief Advisor held a breakfast meeting with Thai dignitaries.
Established in 1997, BIMSTEC has increasingly established itself as an important platform for regional cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade, technology, transport, energy, and counter-terrorism.
