Interim government chief advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus said Sheikh Hasina's Awami League has "no place" for now in the country's politics.

Yunus stated this in an interview with the Financial Times published today (October 30).

Dr Yunus said that no fascist party can exist in a democratic system. Awami League controlled the people, they created (political) mechanisms, they used the institutions of the country for their interests.

Yunus told the UK-based Financial Times that the interim government would not immediately seek the extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India. At the moment, Bangladesh has taken this decision to avoid diplomatic tension with its big neighboring country India.

The International Criminal Tribunal has issued arrest warrants against 45 people including Hasina. Dr Yunus said in this regard, Sheikh Hasina has been accused of crimes against humanity. After the verdict in this case, efforts will be made to bring her back under the extradition treaty with India.

He said that whether Awami League can participate in the next election or not, will be decided based on the consensus of the political parties. They have to determine the political position of the Awami League.

Dr Yunus said in an interview with the Financial Times that he has no desire to join politics or form a political party.

He said that his government has not finalized the outline of the election so far. Their job is to normalize everything and complete reforms. When all the preparations for the election are over, they will discuss about it with the political parties.
