The interim government has taken steps to increase the supply of essential commodities in preparation for the upcoming month of Ramadan, anticipating higher consumer demand. As part of this initiative, the government’s Procurement Advisory Committee has initially approved the import of several essential items. Additional products may be included in the import list based on necessity.

These decisions were disclosed by Finance and Commerce Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed during a press briefing following the committee’s meeting on Wednesday (October 30).

Dr. Ahmed said, "The government is taking proactive measures to prevent any shortage of essential goods during Ramadan. We have decided to import key items such as rice, lentils, oil, and chickpeas to ensure smooth market supply."

He noted that demand for chickpeas and soybean oil usually increases during Ramadan, which is why the government has granted early approval for their import. The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will be responsible for importing sugar, chickpeas, and soybean oil.

Additionally, the government plans to increase the import of dates, a popular item during Ramadan. Dr. Ahmed mentioned that a decision regarding date imports would be made soon, emphasizing, "The government will not take any measures that raise the prices of essential items or cause hardship for people."

The meeting on Wednesday also approved the procurement of 5,000 tons of sugar through a local open tender. The sugar will be purchased at a price of 120.92 BDT per kilogram, totaling 604.6 million BDT.

Moreover, the committee approved the procurement of 10,000 tons of chickpeas through an international open tender, with each kilogram priced at 107.39 BDT, amounting to 1.02 billion BDT in total.

Lastly, the meeting approved the purchase of 3.26 million liters of soybean oil via a local open tender at 163.15 BDT per liter, with a total cost of 531.87 million BDT.
