In the process of forming a new Election Commission (EC), 17 parties and alliances, including the BNP, have submitted names of their preferred candidates to the Cabinet Division. For the position of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), the BNP has proposed former secretaries AMM Nasir Uddin and Shafiqul Islam.

Thursday, November 7, was the final day for political parties to submit their candidate names for the EC. An interim government-formed search committee had requested political parties and alliances to submit their nominations to the Cabinet Secretary. However, the committee excluded the Awami League, which was ousted through the July Revolution, along with the 14-Party Alliance and the Jatiya Party, from this list.

Among the two former secretaries nominated by the BNP for the CEC position, AMM Nasir Uddin previously served as Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Health, retiring in January 2009. The other former secretary, Shafiqul Islam, retired long ago and is currently 76 years old.

Some parties allied with the BNP’s joint movement have also proposed former secretary Shafiqul Islam for the CEC role. Each of the six parties in the Ganatantra Mancha Alliance has individually submitted their nominations to the Cabinet Division, with the names of former secretary Shafiqul Islam and Mohibul Haque reportedly appearing in each submission. Additionally, the Revolutionary Workers Party proposed former secretary Abu Alam Shahid Khan.

The BNP has also proposed eight names for the four Election Commissioner positions, nominating two candidates per position. BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and Joint Convener Shahid Uddin Chowdhury (Annie) met with Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid on Wednesday to submit their party’s proposed list.

Similarly, Jamaat-e-Islami has submitted eight names for the positions of Chief Election Commissioner and four Election Commissioners. Bangladesh Islami Andolan, Islami Oikya Jote, and LDP have also submitted their nominations separately to the Cabinet Division.

The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) proposed five names for the five positions in the EC, submitting its list to the Cabinet Division on Thursday.

For the new EC, the Gono Odhikar Parishad, led by former DUCSU VP Nurul Haque, proposed six names, including three university professors. The party nominated Dhaka University International Relations professor Ruhul Amin, Mass Communication and Journalism professor Robayet Ferdous, and former Jahangirnagar University professor Abdul Latif Masum.

Additionally, the 12-party alliance involved in the joint movement has proposed five names for the five EC positions, including the CEC. The nationalist alliance with similar ideologies also submitted its list to the Cabinet Division.
