Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has urged Bangladeshi officials, NGOs, and civil society leaders to make extra efforts to highlight the country’s climate crisis at the COP-29 summit in Baku.

He made this appeal immediately upon arriving in the Azerbaijani capital on Monday, November 11, to lead Bangladesh’s delegation at the United Nations’ annual climate change conference.

During a coordination meeting at a hotel in Baku, he addressed the Bangladesh delegation, saying, “Our primary objective is to ensure that our concerns and demands are reflected in the final declaration of COP-29.”

At the meeting, Environment Secretary Farhina Ahmed briefed officials on Bangladesh’s position on several key issues at the conference.

She noted that Bangladesh has formed nine teams to participate in discussions across all major areas, including climate finance, loss and damage, just transitions, and adaptation processes. Additionally, at least 29 NGOs and civil society groups from Bangladesh are attending COP-29.

She added that, despite assurances from wealthy Global North countries, Bangladesh has so far received $344 million in grants and $250 million in loans as climate finance.

Earlier, Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus arrived in Baku at 5:15 p.m. local time.

On Tuesday, November 12, he is scheduled to attend the main summit sessions of COP-29 and deliver speeches at least at three significant events.
