The UK’s Minister of State for the Indo-Pacific, Catherine West, is arriving in Dhaka today, Saturday (November 16), for a two-day visit, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This visit is primarily a goodwill trip, ministry sources said. During her stay, Catherine West is scheduled to meet Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus and hold discussions with Foreign Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain. She will also exchange views with leaders of anti-discrimination student movements, political figures, and representatives of civil society. Key topics during her visit will include bilateral trade and investment as well as the Rohingya issue.

On November 14, the Director General of Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Toufiq Hasan, stated that strengthening ties between Bangladesh and the UK, particularly in economic, strategic, and migration partnerships, is a primary focus of the visit.

In her capacity at the UK’s Foreign Office, Catherine West oversees issues related to China, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Island nations. She is also responsible for economic security in the Indian Ocean region, with a focus on export control, economic diplomacy, and the expansion and application of technology. Since 2015, she has been serving as a Labour Party MP for Hornsey and Wood Green.

This marks the first visit by a senior UK government representative to Bangladesh since the interim government took office on August 8, following the ouster of the Awami League government amidst the anti-discrimination student-led uprising. The last high-level British visit was in May this year by then Minister of State for Indo-Pacific Strategy, Anne-Marie Trevelyan.
