Ex-secretary Nasir Uddin Appointed As New CEC
The government has appointed retired Secretary AMM Nasir Uddin as the Chief Election Commissioner.
This information was given in two notifications signed by Cabinet Secretary Dr Sheikh Abdur Rashid on Thursday (November 21).
The notification said that Mr AMM Nasir Uddin, retired Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh has been appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner today (November 21), under the powers conferred by Article 118(1) of the Constitution.
Besides the CEC, the government has also appointed four election commissioners. They are former additional secretary Md Anwarul Islam Sarker, retired district and sessions judge Abdur Rahmanel Masud, former joint secretary Tahmida Ahmed, and retired brigadier general Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah.
Earlier, as per the law on the reorganization of the Election Commission, a six-member search committee was formed on October 29 under the leadership of Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury of the Appellate Division. The committee, after vetting and selecting, sent a list of 10 people to the President's Office on Wednesday (November 20). The President appointed one of them as the Chief Election Commissioner and four as Election Commissioners.
