Polythene Use Decreased Significantly: Environment Ministry
The use of polythene bags has decreased significantly, said Tapan Kumar Biswas, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
He stated this at an awareness campaign on the ban on polythene bags at the capital's New Market Bazar on Friday (November 29) morning.
Tapan Kumar said, "Our activities are ongoing to stop the use of polythene shopping bags in the raw market. We have announced that polythene shopping bags cannot be used from November 1. We are receiving sincere cooperation from all quarters in this regard. A monitoring team has been formed. I am the convener of that. We are monitoring the issue regularly. We are getting sincere responses from everyone. Everyone is admitting that this is harmful."
He said, "166 mobile courts have been conducted across the country so far." During this time, legal action was taken against 349 organizations, and a fine of Tk19,29,900 was imposed. In addition, 40,608 kg of polythene bags were seized.
The Additional Secretary also said that our campaign against the production of polythene shopping bags also continuing. In addition, activities are underway to find alternatives to polythene bags. Government and private organizations and various NGOs have come forward in this regard. We are moving towards success.
Director of the Department of Environment Rajinara Begum, Additional Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Environment Siddharth Shankar Kundu, Senior Assistant Secretary Sabrina Rahman, and others were present at the campaign.
