Polythene Bags Banned in Super Shop From Today
Polythene bags will not be kept in any super shop in the country from Tuesday (October 1) as per the instructions of the interim government. Jute or cloth bags should be used instead.
From November 1, activities to stop the use of polythene will begin in 10 raw markets of Dhaka. A nationwide crackdown on polythene producers has also been announced.
Before this, it was decided to ban polythene bags in a meeting held with the stakeholders to implement the ban on polythene shopping bags on September 9. In that meeting, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser on Environment, Forests and Climate Change, said that no polythene or polypropylene bags can be kept in Supershop.
Managers of Supershop outlets said that they have already issued notices in different places of the shop. The tissue bags, and net bags that they had were removed. Various shapes of bags made of jute are being provided by the Department of Environment. The price of which is from 6 to 17 taka. Customers have to buy them.
Earlier, the government officially banned polythene bags in Bangladesh on March 1, 2002, as per the provisions of the Environment Protection Act, 1995. At that time, the Department of Environment conditionally banned the production, import, marketing, sale, storage, and distribution of all types of polythene shopping bags. Since the ban was imposed in 2002, 931 tonnes of polythene has been seized. 52 factories were evacuated.
