Our Job Not to Catch Thieves, But to Describe Theft: Dr Debapriya
The head of the white paper preparation committee, Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, stated that the white paper preparation committee's job is not to catch thieves but to describe the theft.
He stated this at a press conference in the capital on Monday (December 2) to highlight the Awami League government's corruption over the past 15 years.
Dr. Debapriya said, "We have not found fault with any individual or institution in the white paper, but have discussed the entire process of corruption. The job of this committee is not to catch thieves, but to describe the theft process."
He said, "In 90 days, we have held 18 meetings ourselves. We have held 22 meetings with policymakers. The white paper committee was formed with 12 renowned economists. This white paper has been prepared through a representative committee."
The head of the white paper preparation committee said that each member of the committee has worked without remuneration. If a foreign consultant had been brought in to prepare the white paper, it would have cost at least 25 crore Taka. The committee has done this as a selfless contribution to the country.
Dr Debapriya said that if the entire process of the white paper is not understood, the validity of this document will be questioned. Therefore, it has been prepared by maintaining the involvement of the public.
He said that it will be published fully in print within the next 1 month. The copyright of this report belongs to the Bangladesh government itself. The government has accepted it as its own document.
The committee's observation in the last 15 years has highlighted issues such as GDP-inflation data including revenue evasion and financial loss, government investment, destruction of the food supply chain, looting of the banking sector, labor migration, social safety net, environmental management, and questionable expenditure on development projects.
Earlier, Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya handed over the white paper on the country's economy to Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus on Sunday(December 01).
