"India Will Maintain Friendly Ties," Says Envoy Verma
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Kumar Verma, has assured that India will maintain friendly relations with Bangladesh. He stated that India is willing to work with the interim government in Bangladesh.
Following an attack on the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala, India, on Tuesday, December 3, High Commissioner Pranay Verma was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka for an emergency meeting. He arrived at the ministry at around 4 PM. During the half-hour meeting, a formal protest note was handed over to the Indian envoy on behalf of Bangladesh, according to sources.
Later, speaking to journalists, Pranay Verma said, "We are willing to work with the interim government. We will maintain our friendly relations."
He further added, "The relationship between Bangladesh and India is multifaceted. The bilateral ties will not be hindered by a single incident. We are keen on strengthening connections between the peoples of both countries."
The High Commissioner also emphasized the interdependence between the two nations. "Many initiatives are benefiting both countries, such as electricity supply, essential commodities, and numerous positive developmental projects," he said.
He noted that several positive developments have taken place in the last two months due to mutual cooperation. "We have many positive aspects. We are continuing to work with the interim government and aim to collaborate in various fields, including the economy," he remarked.
Earlier, following the brutal attack and vandalism at the Assistant High Commission in Agartala, where the flagstand was broken, and Bangladesh’s national flag was removed and burned, Dhaka summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Kumar Verma urgently.
India's Ministry of External Affairs described the Agartala incident as "unfortunate" in a statement, emphasizing that diplomatic and consular properties should never be targeted under any circumstances. Seven individuals were arrested in Tripura on Tuesday regarding the incident, and administrative action was taken against four police personnel.
Bangladesh strongly condemned the incident, terming it premeditated, and issued a stern protest. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its deep displeasure, asserting that the attack violated the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
In response, security has been heightened at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. Although no protests or siege programs have been announced by any organizations, security measures have been reinforced.
Earlier on Monday, several supporters of Hindu nationalist groups, including the Hindu Sangram Smriti Sangh Samiti, stormed the premises of Bangladesh’s Assistant High Commission in Agartala, protesting alleged persecution of minorities in Bangladesh.
