The Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) between Bangladesh and India is scheduled for December 9, during which Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will visit Bangladesh.

The confirmation came from the spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaswal, during a weekly briefing on Friday, December 6.

It has been learned that Vikram Misri will lead the Indian delegation in the FOC meeting. His primary meeting will be with Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary, Mohammad Jasim Uddin. Additionally, he is expected to pay courtesy calls on the interim government’s Foreign Affairs Advisor, Tawhid Hossain, and Chief Advisor, Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

This marks the first high-level meeting between the two countries since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. In the past four months under Dr. Yunus's interim administration, three technical committee meetings have been held between the nations.

The last FOC meeting took place in November 2023 in New Delhi. Key issues on the agenda for this meeting include the resumption of India-funded development projects, visa facilitation, increasing direct flights, and discussions on trade and investment. The meeting is seen as an opportunity to de-escalate tensions and normalize relations between the two neighbors.

Bangladesh-India relations have experienced strains since the interim government assumed power following Sheikh Hasina’s ouster on August 5 amid a mass uprising led by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The diplomatic ties have further been tested over the minority rights issue.

The situation became more complicated after the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson for the Sanatan Jagaran Jote. Protests against his arrest were held in multiple locations across India. Additionally, the attack on Bangladesh’s Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Tripura, on Monday, December 2, has added to the tensions.

Bangladesh responded strongly to the incident, summoning the Indian High Commissioner the day after the attack to express its outrage. Following this, India expressed deep regret over the incident and took swift action, arresting seven individuals involved and suspending three police officers.
