93% Primary Teachers to be Appointed Based on Merit

Professor Dr Bidhan Ranjan Ray Poddar, the Advisor on Primary and Mass Education of the Interim Government, has stated that 93% of teachers in government primary schools will be appointed based on merit. There will be no quota for dependents.

He made this announcement during a meeting on Sunday, December 8 at the office of the Divisional Commissioner in Khulna.

Dr Bidhan Ranjan Ray emphasized the importance of pre-service training for teachers to improve the quality of primary education. He stated that increasing the budget for primary education is now a pressing need.

He further mentioned that establishing a quality educational system at the primary level cannot be done by the Ministry alone and that the participation of all sectors of society is necessary.

The advisor also discussed the implementation of 'Mid-Day Meal' in primary schools. He mentioned that 'Mid-Day Meal' is currently being implemented in some schools in Cox's Bazar and Bandarban. Within the next five years, this program will be expanded to all primary schools in the country. The project is awaiting approval from the National Economic Council (NEC). In the first phase, the program will be introduced in all schools in 150 upazilas.

Dr Bidhan Ranjan Ray Poddar later addressed another session on "Measures for the Improvement of Primary Education" with field administration officials. The meeting was chaired by Divisional Commissioner Firoz Sarker. Among the other speakers were Additional Director General of the Directorate of Primary Education Mohammad Atiqur Rahman, Divisional Deputy Director of Khulna Dr Md Shafiqul Islam, and Additional DIG Joydeb Chowdhury.

Various administrators, Upazila Executive Officers, District Education Officers, Superintendents of PTIs, and Thana Education Officers participated in the event both in person and online.
