4 Women Receive Begum Rokeya Padak 2024
Begum Rokeya Padak, Bangladesh's highest honor for women, was awarded to four exceptional women at a ceremony held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka today (9 December).
In recognition of their outstanding contributions to society, women's education, and women's empowerment, they have been awarded the prestigious Begum Rokeya Padak 2024 by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.
The award ceremony was organized by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs in celebration of the 144th birth anniversary and the 92nd death anniversary of Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, a pioneering advocate for women's rights and education in Bangladesh.
During his address as the chief guest, Dr Yunus expressed pride in honoring Begum Rokeya's legacy, saying: "We are proud to honor and cherish the memory of Begum Rokeya."
This year's recipients include Perween Hasan, an educator and rights activist who serves as the Chairperson of Transparency International Bangladesh and the Vice-Chancellor of Central Women's University. She has been a strong advocate for women's rights and transparency in education.
Taslima Akhter, a labor and women's rights activist and renowned photographer was also honored for her work in advocating for the rights of working women and capturing their struggles and resilience through her photography.
Rani Hamid, Bangladesh's first female International Chess Master, was recognized for her groundbreaking achievements in the world of chess, inspiring countless women to pursue sports at the highest levels.
Shireen Haque, the founder of the women’s rights organization Nariopokkho, was awarded for her tireless efforts in promoting gender equality and protecting the rights of women across Bangladesh.
The award is presented annually on Begum Rokeya Day, commemorating her tireless advocacy for women's rights and reform.
