Dr Yunus is the Only Leader with Such Exceptional Qualifications: Ramos
Jose Ramos-Horta, President of Timor-Leste expressed admiration for Dr Muhammad Yunus, stating that Dr Yunus holds over a hundred honorary degrees, which is astonishing. He added that Dr Yunus might be the only leader in the world who is so highly esteemed and possesses such robust academic credentials.
During a joint press conference at the Chief Advisor's Office on Sunday (15 December), Ramos-Horta made these remarks. This is the first time his Bangladesh visit.
The President of Timor-Leste said that having someone like Dr Muhammad Yunus in charge of governance would be a blessing for the people of Bangladesh.
Inviting Bangladeshi organizations to invest in Timor-Leste, Ramos-Horta said that his country is keen to strengthen economic and trade relations with Bangladesh in the future.
Interim government head Dr Muhammad Yunus mentioned that a void was created in the country after the previous Prime Minister fled. To honor the expectations of students and citizens who participated in the uprising, a new Bangladesh must be built.
He also noted that Ramos-Horta was one of the individuals on the international stage who stood against the previous government's hostility toward him. Yunus expressed hope that, as an ASEAN member, Ramos-Horta would support Bangladesh in resolving the Rohingya crisis. Furthermore, as the President of resource-rich Timor-Leste, his diplomatic and commercial support could greatly benefit Bangladesh.
On Saturday (14 December) at 10:30 pm, President Jose Ramos-Horta arrived in Dhaka for a four-day visit. He was welcomed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by the Interim Government's Chief Advisor and Nobel laureate economist Dr Muhammad Yunus. A red carpet reception was extended to the Timor-Leste President at the airport.
On Sunday at the Chief Advisor's Office in Tejgaon, Bangladesh signed two Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) with Timor-Leste, including a visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic and official passports. The two countries also signed an agreement to establish a Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM).
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Ramos-Horta is scheduled to visit Bangladesh from 14 to 17 December. During his visit, a visa exemption agreement for official and diplomatic passport holders will be signed. Additionally, the announcement of the opening of Timor-Leste's Honorary Consulate in Dhaka is expected.
