Political Parties Plot to Undermine Interim Government: Adviser Nahid
Political parties are attempting to portray the current interim government as a failure, remarked Md. Nahid Islam, Adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. He made this statement on Wednesday (December 11) during a meeting with a delegation from British Global Partners Governance (GPG) at the ministry.
Highlighting that the interim government assumed responsibility following an uprising, Nahid Islam said, “This is an unprecedented event that has never happened before. I’m not aware of any similar instance elsewhere in the world. We are striving to operate under such extraordinary circumstances.”
When former Scottish Parliament member Lord Jeremy Purvis inquired about the challenges faced by the interim government, the adviser explained, “The primary challenges are maintaining law and order, addressing economic issues, advancing reforms based on consensus with political parties, and establishing global connections.”
In response to a question from Chile’s former Minister of Social Development, Giorgio Jackson, regarding reforms and elections, Nahid Islam stated, “Political parties want the reforms to take place under their control. Therefore, they are trying to discredit the current interim government. They are prioritizing elections over reforms.”
When Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Officer Matt Charter asked which areas the interim government seeks assistance in, the adviser responded, “Your experience and advice on post-uprising democratic processes and genocide trials are extremely valuable to us.”
The adviser pointed out, “Various propaganda campaigns are being carried out internationally. Many are failing to correctly interpret the mass uprising. People are unable to comprehend how such a significant authoritarian regime could fall in such a short time. As a result, there are conspiracies both domestically and internationally. Propaganda regarding minority oppression is also being spread. Many are attempting to deny that this movement was a democratic uprising.”
Nahid Islam further stated, “Bangladesh has been facing a prolonged human rights crisis. People were unable to vote, and thousands were forcibly disappeared. The country’s people were living in a suffocating environment. Therefore, safeguarding human rights is one of the key priorities of the interim government.”
The GPG delegation assured full support to the interim government.
