Main Tasks of Interim Government Are Genocide Justice, Reforms, Elections: Asif Nazrul
Justice for genocide, reforms, and elections are the three main tasks of the interim government, stated Asif Nazrul, Advisor for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs.
He made this statement during a dialogue titled "From Disappearances and Killings to the Challenges of Genocide Justice" organized by the Forum for Bangladesh Studies (FBS) at the Krishibid Institution in Dhaka on Saturday (28 December).
Asif Nazrul said, "As the law advisor of this government, my primary responsibility is to ensure justice for genocide."
Highlighting the absence of judges and investigation officers in the International Crimes Tribunal, he added, "A prosecution team has been formed within a week. However, justice cannot be rushed in a way that raises questions. I want to assure everyone that there will be no negligence in the judicial process. There are no delays in the proceedings."
During this time, the advisor also spoke about the issue of handcuffing the accused.
He said, "There is now criticism regarding the absence of handcuffs on the accused during trial hearings. During the trials for crimes against humanity, the accused's lawyers mentioned that three months were given for hearings back then. Now, only one month is being allowed. At that time, no accused were handcuffed, and even now, they are not being handcuffed."
