Michael Chakma Files Enforced Disappearance Allegation with Tribunal
Michael Chakma, a leader of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF), who was a victim of enforced disappearance during former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's tenure, has submitted a complaint to the International Crimes Tribunal.
On Wednesday (December 18) at 9 AM, Chakma entered the tribunal's Chief Prosecutor's Office, accompanied by photographer Shahidul Alam and his wife, Professor Rahnuma Ahmed.
Michael Chakma was reportedly abducted on April 9, 2019, in the Kanchpur area of Narayanganj while returning to Dhaka after organizational work. Following the fall of the Hasina government, he was released from captivity on August 7, 2024, after being held for over five years. He was left blindfolded in a location near Chittagong in the early hours of the morning.
UPDF Central Vice President Nuthun Kumar Chakma had previously stated in a press release that Michael Chakma had been detained for over five years on the orders of the “fascist Awami League government.”
