Major Overhaul Planned for the Education System, Says Press Secretary
The government has announced plans to revamp the education system to align with global standards and prepare students for the future. Alongside efforts to eliminate corruption from the education sector, the University Grants Commission (UGC) will be transformed into the "University Commission" to enhance oversight of higher education, according to Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser.
At a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Tuesday (December 17), Shafiqul Alam highlighted the government’s vision and ongoing efforts to address key issues in education.
Tackling Corruption in Education
“Corruption in areas such as promotions and transfers in the Ministry of Education and its various offices has been identified, including the widespread practice of bribery and commissions. We are actively working to address these issues and make the education sector corruption-free,” said Shafiqul Alam.
Enhancing Teacher Training
The press secretary emphasized the government's commitment to improving teacher quality. “Globally, teacher training is given significant importance. To improve educational standards, our teachers need to reach that level. Currently, public sector teachers have more access to training opportunities than private sector teachers. Addressing this imbalance is part of the government’s plan,” he explained.
Modernizing ICT and Technical Education
On modernizing ICT education, Shafiqul Alam noted, “ICT education in schools and colleges has not kept pace with global advancements. If this gap isn’t addressed, we won’t produce technically skilled students with the required quality. Plans are underway to modernize ICT, vocational, and technical education across the country.”
Establishing the University Commission
Regarding the transformation of the UGC, Shafiqul Alam stated, “The term ‘grants’ will be removed, and it will become the ‘University Commission.’ This change reflects the need for a broader mandate to oversee both public and private universities. The commission will ensure that the quality of higher education in Bangladesh meets international standards.”
Focused and Realistic Implementation
In response to a question, Shafiqul Alam stressed the importance of achievable goals, saying, “We have many plans, but the focus is on what we can realistically implement. Unlimited time isn’t available, so we are prioritizing areas where meaningful and high-quality changes can be made.”
The press briefing was also attended by Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Mazumdar and Senior Government Press Secretary Faiz Ahmed.
