Bangladesh Recognizes Fundamental Right to Uninterrupted Internet Access
Bangladesh has become the first country in South Asia to officially recognize uninterrupted internet access as a fundamental right for every citizen.
On Wednesday, December 25, the interim government's Information Technology Policy Advisor Faiz Tayeb shared this information.
He stated that Bangladesh has made history as the first South Asian nation to recognize uninterrupted internet access as a right for its citizens. This right has been incorporated into Section 2(b) of the Cyber Security Ordinance, 2024.
It has been reported that the government has approved the draft of the "Cyber Security Ordinance, 2024," eliminating all controversial sections from the previously enacted "Cyber Security Act" by the Awami League government. The ordinance formally recognizes the right of every citizen to uninterrupted internet access. The provision regarding this right is explicitly mentioned in Section 2(b) of the ordinance. The draft was approved during the 17th meeting of the Advisory Council held on Tuesday, December 24. The details were later disclosed in a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital by the Chief Advisor's Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam.
Regarding the matter, Advisor Faiz Tayeb said, "The Cyber Security Ordinance is robust and forward-thinking in its definition. It is also rich in terms of technological and technical aspects. The law ensures humane considerations and provides ample compensation for victims. It has also introduced mandatory reporting to courts in cases of harassment while granting sufficient space for judges."
He further added, "Most provisions of the approved law are now bailable. Additionally, compared to the Digital Security Act, punishments have been reduced to less than half."
"Rest assured, the new Cyber Security Ordinance will secure our cyberspace while also safeguarding the freedom of the press," concluded the IT Policy Advisor.
