Employment Creation Tops Interim Govt’s Agenda: Advisor Nahid
Md. Nahid Islam, Advisor to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, stated that state reforms are ongoing, and economic reforms will follow. Attracting foreign investors to create employment opportunities is the interim government’s primary goal.
He made these remarks on Sunday (October 27) during a meeting with South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh, Park Young-sik, at the office of the Posts and Telecommunications Division in the Secretariat.
The advisor explained that the interim government is working to create a favorable environment for foreign companies to invest in Bangladesh, aiming to generate employment through these investments.
During the meeting, Ambassador Park Young-sik recommended the government take steps to prevent the use of illegal mobile phones. He mentioned that South Korea is the fourth-largest investor in Bangladesh, with companies like Samsung and LG having invested in the country. However, he expressed concerns that high tax rates are increasing production costs, causing financial losses for these companies.
In response, Advisor Nahid said that tax reductions are under the jurisdiction of the National Board of Revenue (NBR). The possibility of tax adjustments will be considered during the economic reform process to ensure no other sector is adversely affected.
The meeting was attended by Information and Technology Division Secretary Shish Hayder Chowdhury, Posts and Telecommunications Division Secretary Dr. Mushfiqur Rahman, Deputy Chief of Mission Jinhee Baek, Samsung Bangladesh Country Manager Hwang Sung, and several others.
During the discussion, when the government proposed South Korea invest in the state-owned Telephone Shilpa Sangstha (TSS) Limited, the ambassador expressed interest in pursuing joint investment opportunities with Bangladesh.
