Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman Can Participate in Upcoming Elections: Attorney General
Attorney General Mohammad Asaduzzaman has confirmed that no legal obstacles are preventing former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman from participating in the upcoming national elections.
Asaduzzaman explained that all legal cases against both leaders have been resolved, allowing them to take part in the elections without any hindrances.
Asaduzzaman made these remarks at a shadow parliament organized by Debate for Democracy at the FDC in the capital on Friday (27 December).
During his remarks, the Attorney General stated that if convicted, leaders of the Awami League, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, would be barred from participating in the elections. He added that election offenders from the ruling party would be judged under the previous Public Representative Law due to the various irregularities that occurred during the Awami League's tenure.
Asaduzzaman also expressed confidence that the "revolution of July" would not fail due to conspiracies, regardless of their strength, and emphasized that it would remain unshakable.
The Attorney General also commented that, after the cruel downfall of Hasina, no one from her party dared to stand by her. He accused those who destroyed the electoral system, undermined the constitution, and violated people's rights, accusing them of becoming historical villains.
The shadow parliament session was chaired by Hassan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiran, Chairman of Debate for Democracy. In his speech, Kiran condemned former Chief Justice Khairul Haque for annulling the caretaker government system, accusing him of dishonest motives aimed at keeping the "fascist" Awami League in power. Kiran called for Haque's arrest and trial for his alleged role in manipulating the caretaker government verdict.
Kiran also levelled strong criticisms against the Awami League for undermining the public's right to vote, accusing the party of corrupting the electoral process through fraudulent, one-sided, and "midnight" elections.
He further alleged that in the last three elections, widespread election fraud involved the Election Commission, administration, police, returning officers, and polling officers, all of whom he believes should be held accountable.
