The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has issued a stern warning against the use of fireworks and firecrackers to celebrate New Year's Eve on December 31.

In a press release, the ministry emphasized that such activities are harmful to public health and biodiversity, urging everyone to cooperate by avoiding them. The ministry highlighted that fireworks and firecrackers significantly worsen existing noise and air pollution levels, posing serious risks to both humans and the environment.

The statement recalled a tragic incident in which a child with a heart condition died after being startled by the loud noises of fireworks during New Year festivities. Excessive noise can lead to severe health problems, including hearing and memory loss, sleep disturbances, anxiety, aggression, high blood pressure, tinnitus, dizziness, heart disease, mental instability, strokes, and heart attacks.

According to the Noise Pollution (Control) Rules, 2006, unauthorized fireworks and firecrackers are prohibited. Violations of Rule 7 are considered punishable offenses under Rule 18 of the same regulations.

Penalties for first-time offenders include up to one month of imprisonment, a fine of up to Tk 5,000, or both. Repeat violations may result in harsher punishments, including up to six months of imprisonment or a fine of up to Tk 10,000, or both.

The ministry urged citizens to prioritize public safety and environmental well-being by refraining from such unlawful practices.
