The entire country, including Dhaka, has been experiencing intense cold, causing significant disruption to daily life. As the winter deepens, the government has initiated measures to alleviate the suffering of the cold-affected population.

A press release from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, issued on Friday (January 3), announced the distribution of 679,000 blankets from the Chief Advisor's Relief Fund. An allocation of BDT 338.75 million has been made for purchasing these blankets, which will be distributed across 495 upazilas in 64 districts and municipalities in all eight divisions.

Previously, at the onset of winter, the ministry provided 15,250 blankets to residents of 14 northern districts. District Commissioners and Upazila Executive Officers have been instructed to ensure the proper distribution of the relief items while adhering to financial regulations.

Chilling Temperatures Across the Country
On Friday morning, the temperature dropped to 8.3°C, down from 8.5°C recorded earlier at 6:00 am. The day before, January 2, temperatures were higher at 11.3°C at the same time. The Tetulia First-Class Weather Office confirmed these readings.

The cold wave has paralyzed daily activities, especially during the night. Foggy conditions, accompanied by chilly winds, have caused discomfort to many, with dense fog severely affecting visibility in Dhaka and other regions. Transportation has been disrupted, as vehicles navigated damp, fog-covered roads with headlights on.

Impact on Public Health and Daily Life
Hospitals across districts are witnessing a surge in patients suffering from cold-related illnesses, including fever, colds, diarrhoea, and pneumonia. The capital, Dhaka, was engulfed in dense fog on Friday morning, further exacerbating the challenges. Many roads remained quiet due to the holiday, but those venturing out reported facing severe discomfort despite wearing warm clothing.

In Tejgaon, labourers warmed themselves by fires to cope with the biting cold. "It's freezing, but the fire helps a little," one worker remarked. Rickshaw puller Abdul Majid shared, "Even though it feels like it's drizzling due to the fog, I have to work. My family depends on me."

Homeless individuals in Mohammadpur described their plight, expressing a desperate need for warm clothes and blankets. "We're struggling in this cold, and we can't afford anything to keep us warm," said one resident.

Weather Outlook
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecasted that the current weather conditions may persist for a few more days. A notice issued on Thursday (January 2) indicated a slight rise in day and night temperatures until Sunday (January 5). However, dense fog is expected to prevail, exacerbating the cold in some areas and disrupting air travel, river transport, and road communication.

Efforts are underway to mitigate the impact of the severe weather, as the government continues distributing relief to those most in need.
