Following heightened tensions at the Bangladesh-India border, Bangladesh summoned Indian Ambassador Pranay Verma to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, January 12, for an explanation regarding the situation. In a reciprocal move, India summoned Bangladesh's Deputy High Commissioner, Nurul Islam, to Delhi on January 13.

The dispute centres on the construction of a barbed wire fence by India's Border Security Force (BSF) in the Chapainawabganj and Naogaon districts along the border. According to an ANI report, Bangladesh’s action followed the escalating tension caused by the BSF's fencing activities.

During his meeting with Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jasim Uddin, Indian Ambassador Pranay Verma assured the media that India remains committed to maintaining a crime-free border to combat issues like smuggling, human trafficking, and criminal movements. He mentioned that both nations have an understanding regarding border fencing for security reasons, and the border security forces of both sides are in communication to implement the initiative. Verma expressed optimism that mutual cooperation would help prevent criminal activities.

In contrast, Foreign Secretary Jasim Uddin voiced Bangladesh's serious concerns to Ambassador Verma regarding the BSF's recent actions at the border. He specifically pointed out the unauthorized construction of barbed wire fences and related operations by the BSF, which have escalated tensions. Uddin emphasized that such actions undermine the spirit of cooperation and friendly relations between the two countries.

The Foreign Secretary also conveyed deep concern over the recent incident in which a Bangladeshi citizen was killed by the BSF in Sunamganj. He stressed the importance of resolving these issues peacefully.
