Statement from CA's Press Wing Following Tulip's Resignation
Following the resignation of Tulip Siddiq, the City Minister in the UK's ruling Labour government, amid allegations of corruption and irregularities, the Press Wing of Bangladesh's interim government issued a statement.
The statement was posted on the verified Facebook page of the Chief Advisor late Tuesday night (January 14) at around 11:45 PM.
It declared the interim government's commitment to accountability and justice, emphasizing its dedication to working with global partners to repatriate funds siphoned off from Bangladesh.
The statement further mentioned the ongoing investigation into the misuse of $5 billion in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project, highlighting corruption during the previous government's tenure. It noted that such corruption had impeded Bangladesh's progress and resulted in significant financial deficits due to capital flight.
Notably, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh is investigating allegations of corruption against Tulip Siddiq, niece of the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was overthrown by a popular uprising.
Reports in the UK media have surfaced, revealing that Tulip used flats in London owned by individuals close to Sheikh Hasina's government. Facing mounting criticism, Tulip Siddiq resigned from her position as the UK government's City Minister (Economic Secretary to the Treasury and City Minister) on Tuesday.
