The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is set to acquire sound grenades and tear shells to enhance its operational capabilities, according to Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

Speaking to journalists on Monday (January 20) after a meeting at the Secretariat, the advisor explained that the decision was made following an incident at the Chapainawabganj border, where tensions arose between citizens of Bangladesh and India. During the clash, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) deployed sound grenades and tear gas, leaving many questioning why BGB did not respond similarly.

"BGB currently does not have sound grenades or tear shells; they are equipped only with lethal weapons, which they could not use in this situation. Permission has been granted now for BGB to procure tear shells and sound grenades to address such scenarios in the future," Jahangir Alam stated.

He emphasized the need to bolster BGB's capacity to maintain order at the borders and respond swiftly to special situations. Modern tools and equipment will be provided to BGB to ensure effective border management.

The advisor also assured that the border situation remains stable with no significant disturbances. However, efforts are being made to strengthen BGB's activities to combat smuggling, illegal infiltration, and other security challenges in the border areas.

On the issue of illegal foreigners, the Home Affairs Advisor noted that there are currently 33,648 foreigners living in Bangladesh without proper documentation. They have until January 31 to submit the necessary papers to legalize their stay. Otherwise, action will be taken.
