The Chief of the Electoral System Reform Commission, Badiul Alam Majumdar, has stated that a recommendation has been made to cancel elections in constituencies where less than 40% of votes are cast.

He made this announcement to journalists on Tuesday (January 21) at the Election Commission (EC) office in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Majumdar also mentioned that individuals involved in enforced disappearances, killings, or crimes against humanity should be barred from running in elections.

He emphasized that the proposed reforms aim to cleanse the electoral arena of corruption, not to serve any ulterior motives.

The Commission head further added that a special commission will be formed to investigate and prosecute former Chief Election Commissioners and Election Commissioners who have failed in their constitutional duties. A neutral investigation is necessary for their accountability.

Majumdar clarified that the commission is not in favor of excluding any political party from elections. However, it is up to the people and political parties to decide if those responsible for the July massacre and crimes against humanity should participate in future elections or hold power.
