India Extends Sheikh Hasina's Visa Amid Rising Extradition Pressure
Amidst a student and public uprising, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh and sought refuge in India. An arrest warrant has been issued against her in Bangladesh, charging her with genocide and crimes against humanity.
The interim government of Bangladesh has formally requested India to extradite her. In the meantime, the Indian government has extended Sheikh Hasina’s visa.
This news was reported on Wednesday (January 8) by the Indian news outlet Hindustan Times.
According to the report, Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh on August 5, 2024, in the face of a student and public movement against the Awami League government, and she has been residing in India since then. Recently, her visa has been extended, though the report did not specify the date of the extension.
The Hindustan Times mentioned that the extension process involved India's Ministry of Home Affairs and the local Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO). However, rumors about granting her political asylum have been denied, although India does not have specific laws regarding refugees and asylum.
Meanwhile, on December 23, Dhaka officially requested New Delhi to extradite Sheikh Hasina to face trial.
The Hindustan Times report suggests that the interim government's move is seen as an effort to increase pressure on New Delhi for Sheikh Hasina's extradition.
Additionally, on January 6, a second arrest warrant was issued by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal against Sheikh Hasina for charges of abduction and other crimes. The tribunal has ordered Sheikh Hasina and 12 of her associates to appear by February 12.
