Chief Adviser Mourns Death of KM Shafiullah
Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government, has expressed profound sorrow at the passing of retired Major General KM Shafiullah, a sector commander of the Liberation War and former Chief of Army Staff.
In a heartfelt condolence message, Prof Yunus highlighted KM Shafiullah's pivotal role during the 1971 Liberation War. "As the second in command of the 2nd East Bengal Regiment in Joydevpur, he made significant contributions to the war effort. He led the 'S' Force with remarkable bravery and was awarded the title 'Bir Uttam' for his extraordinary service," he said.
Prof Yunus also reflected on KM Shafiullah's post-independence contributions, noting his service as the Chief of Army Staff from 1972 to 1975.
"We are deeply grateful for his lifelong dedication to the nation. His heroic efforts during the Liberation War and his contributions to the country's progress will forever be remembered with respect by people from all walks of life in Bangladesh," Prof Yunus remarked.
He offered prayers for the eternal peace of KM Shafiullah's soul and extended heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.
KM Shafiullah passed away this morning at the age of 90 while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.
