Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the interim government, has called an emergency meeting in response to the recent announcement of new US tariffs. The meeting is scheduled to take place this evening at 7:30 pm at the State Guest House Jamuna.
The information was confirmed on Saturday afternoon by Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser.
According to Alam, the meeting will focus on the implications of the new US tariff policy. Senior experts, advisers, and relevant government officials have been asked to attend the discussion.
The move comes after US President Donald Trump declared significant tariff increases on imports from multiple countries, including several in Asia.
The announcement was made during a press conference at the White House on Wednesday, April 2, at 4:00 pm local time in Washington (2:00 am, Thursday, Bangladesh time).
Among the affected Asian nations, the newly imposed tariffs are as follows:
- China: 34%
- Vietnam: 46%
- Taiwan: 32%
- Japan: 24%
- India: 26%
- South Korea: 25%
- Thailand: 36%
- Malaysia: 24%
- Cambodia: 49%
- Bangladesh: 37%
- Singapore: 10%
- Philippines: 17%
- Pakistan: 29%
- Sri Lanka: 44%
- Myanmar: 44%
- Laos: 48%
According to an official statement from the White House, the 10% tariffs will take effect from 12:01 am (US local time) on April 5. Tariffs exceeding 10% will be implemented from 12:01 am on April 9.
