Prime Adviser’s Press Secretary, Shafikul Alam, has stated that the Awami League will not be allowed to hold any political programs until it apologizes and its top leadership is brought to justice for crimes, including the July-August killings.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the Prime Adviser’s Press Wing at the Foreign Service Academy on Wednesday (January 29), he made this remark in response to a journalist’s question.

When asked about the government's stance on Awami League’s activities, the Press Secretary said, “The government's position on Awami League is very clear. The party’s top leadership was involved in the July killings. Even a Human Rights Watch report has stated that Sheikh Hasina herself ordered enforced disappearances and killings.”

He further added, “A massive massacre took place before our eyes. So many young people were killed, lost their eyesight, or had their limbs amputated. Yet, the Awami League has shown no remorse. Instead, they continue to spread lies.”

Reaffirming the government's firm position, he said, “Until Awami League apologizes, until their top leaders are brought to justice and held accountable, they will not be allowed to hold any programs. Our stance is clear: first, they must face justice.”

In response to another question, the Press Secretary stated that Awami League must sincerely apologize, and a new, clean leadership must emerge. He pointed out that even those within the party who are not directly involved in the killings have neither expressed remorse nor called for accountability.

“Nobody from Awami League is coming forward to reject Hasina’s leadership or demand clean leadership. Has anyone shown any remorse?” he questioned.
