Zia Charitable Trust case: Khaleda gets 7 years jail

The court has awarded seven years imprisonment to four persons each including Begum Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case. Besides, they were fined 10 lakh taka each.

Judge Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman of the Dhaka Special Court-5 set up in the old central jail delivered the order.

According to the brief description of the case, Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) filed case with Tejgaon police station over allegation of illegal transaction of 3 crore 15 lakh 43 thousand taka in the name of Zia Charitable Trust. The other accused in the case are- former political secretary of Khaleda Zia, Harris Chowdhury, Ziaul Islam Munna and Monirul Islam Khan. Of them Harris Chowdhury is absconding.

On February 8, Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 delivered the verdict of five years imprisonment and fines to Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. She filed appeal in the High Court against the punishment. The appeal was made seeking time for disposal which was placed before the Chamber Judge Hasan Fayez Siddique on Sunday. He sent the appeal to the regular bench of Appellate Division for hearing on Monday.

ACC filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case against four persons including Khaleda Zia for embezzling 3 crore 15 lakh 43 thousand taka on August 8, 2011. Total 32 witnesses were produced before the court. ACC filed the charge sheet before the court on January 16, 2012. The then Judge Basudev Roy framed charge against the accused on March 19, 2014.

Earlier on Monday morning, the court rejected the leave to appeal against the High Court verdict of continuing trial in absence of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Zia Charitable Trust graft case. The seven member appeal bench headed by the Chief Justice delivered the order.

On February 8, Khaleda Zia was sent in jail following the verdict of five years imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. She is at present undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU).
