The state has filed an appeal against the High Court's decision to dismiss four extortion cases filed against Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the BNP.

The appeal is scheduled to be heard on Sunday, January 5, 2025, by a bench of four judges, led by Senior Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam, in the Appellate Division.

In its petition, the state argued that the High Court's ruling to dismiss the cases was erroneous. These cases, which were filed in 2007, accused Tarique Rahman of extortion in the Gulshan, Kafrul, Shahbagh, and Dhanmondi police jurisdictions.

On October 23, 2024, a High Court bench comprising Justice A.K.M. Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain dismissed the four cases.
