Nayapaltan incident criminal offense: EC Secretary

Election Commission (EC) Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said, EC has said that the unwanted incident that took place at Nayapaltan in the capital on November 14 was a criminal offense. Police have been asked to investigate the incident impartially.

He said these after holding EC meeting at the Nirbachan Bhaban at Agargaon in the capital on Monday. The meeting was presided over by Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda where other Commissioners and EC Secretary were present.

The EC Secretary said, the commission sought a full- fledged report from Inspector General of Police (IGP) over the Nayapaltan incident. On Sunday IGP submitted the complete report to us along with audio-video and photographs. The report was upheld in the commission meeting on Monday. Reviews were made in the meeting.

Helal Uddin Ahmed said, EC has sought cooperation from all political parties and voters so that election environment is not hampered.

He said, police are the only responsible authority for investigating the criminal offenses. But we have told police to investigate impartially.

The EC Secretary also said, EC has directed police not to harass any innocent person following the incident. EC also asked them to keep it in mind that this type of incident won’t take place in future.

About removing posters-banners of electoral campaign he said, we were informed from the field level that 90 percent campaign materials were removed. Action will be taken against them who have not removed the materials. One Magistrate was appointed in each upazila in this connection.
