Voting suspended in Gaibandha-3 due to death of candidate

Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed has informed that election on December 30 will be suspended in Gaibandha-3 constituency following death of Jatiya Oikyafront candidate Dr. T I M Fazle Rabbi. The election will be halted in the constituency according to the section 17-1 of the Representation of the People Order.

He said these while replying questions to the newsmen at his office at the Election Commission on Thursday.

Helal Uddin Ahmed said, the other Commissioners including the Chief Election Commissioner will deliver further decision in this regard later after sending the detail report along with the Death Certificate of the candidate by the concerned Returning Officer. But, election will not be held there on December 30. Aftermath, taking the decision the reschedule for election will be declared.

About candidacy of Jamaat-e-Islami candidates the EC Secretary said, Commission has received the High Court letter on Thursday. In this regard order was given to legal department to inform the Commission after examining. The Commission will deliver decision within two days on the matter.

Meanwhile, Jatiya Oikyafront nominated candidate and Acting Chairman of Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar) Dr. T I M Fazle Rabbi breathed his last at his home at Banani in the capital on Thursday morning due to previous illness. He was suffering from different complexities including lungs infection and high blood pressure for long period.

Dr. Fazle Rabbi was taking part in the election with the symbol sheaf of paddy from Gaibandha-3 (Palashbari-Sadullapur) constituency.

He was elected Member of Parliament from Jatiya Party from Gaibandha-3 constituency in 1986, 1988, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2008. He was father of three sons and two daughters.

Dr. T I M Fazle Rabbi was born on October 1 in 1934 at Talukjamira village under Palashbari upazila in Gaibandha. He was the second among six brothers and two sisters. His father Ahsan Uddin Chowdhury was a school teacher.

He obtained his BSc (honors) degree from Dhaka University in 1957 and joined government job in agriculture ministry. He obtained his MSc from Texas, USA in 1963 and also obtained his PhD degree in 1965.Later he joined Bangladesh Agriculture University in Mymensingh as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Fazle Rabbi joined HM Ershad’s Jatiya Party in 1984. Later he served as Political Adviser to HM Ershad. He also served as the Land Minister, Relief and Rehabilitation Minister and Establishment Minister.
