Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has canceled her visit to five Asian countries, including Bangladesh, due to ongoing discussions related to the Ukraine war.
The information was confirmed on Thursday (August 21) by a reliable source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Earlier, the Chief Adviser's Office had issued a gazette notification, declaring Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni a 'very important person' during her visit to Bangladesh on August 30 and 31, under the power granted by Section 2(a) of the Special Security Force Act, 2021.
The Italian Prime Minister was scheduled to arrive on a two-day visit on August 30 with her daughter, following an invitation from the head of the interim government, Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus. A meeting between the Prime Minister and the Chief Adviser was also planned for August 31.
Meloni's trip was set to begin in Bangladesh before continuing to Singapore, Vietnam, South Korea, and Japan. While preparations for her visit in Dhaka were nearly complete, it was canceled at the last minute.
When asked about the reason for the cancellation, a diplomat stated that Italy, as one of the leading countries in NATO, is playing a crucial role in discussions between the United States and Russia regarding the Ukraine war. Meloni has canceled her Asia tour due to this busy schedule.
