The demonstration of the government primary school teachers continued for the second consecutive day on Sunday at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital.
Teachers under the banner of the 'Primary Teachers’ Demand Implementation Council' reiterated their three-point demand and called for the resignation of the Advisers to the Ministries of Home Affairs and Primary and Mass Education.
A day before, on Saturday, Agitating government primary school teachers initiated an indefinite work stoppage to press for their three-point demands and protest against the police attack on their demonstration at Shahbagh. As a result, teaching activities have been suspended in over 65,000 schools across the country.
The decision to strike was made after police used sound grenades, tear gas, and rubber bullets on the primary teachers' 'Pen Renunciation' program at Shahbagh, Dhaka, on Saturday afternoon, leaving many teachers injured.
"A daylong work abstention is being observed at primary schools across the country in protest against the attack by law enforcers," Abul Kashem, president of the Bangladesh Primary Teachers’ Association, told the journalists on Sunday, adding that they would continue their sit-in and work abstention programmes simultaneously until their demands are met.
“Yesterday (Saturday), we went to Shahbagh for a peaceful march titled ‘Kolom Shomarpon’ (Pen Renunciation). Police attacked us there, arresting five of our colleagues and injuring more than a hundred. Moreover, the Adviser to the Primary and Mass Education Ministry termed our demands irrational. We therefore demand the resignation of both advisers,” he added.
Meanwhile, teachers' three-point demands are -- Salary Grade Upgrade: Providing assistant teachers with a salary under the 10th grade; Higher Grade Resolution: Finding a permanent solution to the complications related to higher pay grades and Departmental Promotion Guarantee: Ensuring 100% departmental promotion for assistant teachers.
