Bangladesh to Send Relief Supplies, Rescue Team to Disaster-Stricken Sri Lanka

Bangladesh will send emergency relief supplies and a rescue team to flood- and landslide-hit Sri Lanka. The interim government is preparing the dispatch, which is expected to be sent on December 3, pending weather clearance.

According to a press release issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the humanitarian mission, ordered by Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus in response to the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, will use two special Bangladesh Air Force aircraft to transport essential materials and personnel.

The deployment is a coordinated effort involving the Chief Adviser’s Office, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Disaster Management and Relief, and Health, the Armed Forces Division, BGMEA and Essential Drugs Company Ltd.

Sri Lanka is facing a devastating humanitarian crisis following sudden flash floods and landslides triggered by Cyclone Ditvah. The disaster has tragically claimed 355 lives so far, with at least 366 people still reported missing.

The immense damage includes over 20,000 homes destroyed and the forced evacuation of nearly 210,000 people to temporary shelters. In response to the crisis, the Sri Lankan government has declared a state of emergency and issued an urgent plea for international support.

CA Expresses Condolences over Casualties

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed deep condolences to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake following the tragic loss of lives and widespread devastation caused by ‘Cyclone Ditwah’, one of the worst weather-related disasters to hit the island nation in recent years.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of lives and the widespread devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, which has brought one of the worst weather-related disasters Sri Lanka has faced in recent years,” he wrote to the Sri Lankan President in a message on Friday.

Chief Adviser’s Press Wing released the message on Monday.

In the message, the Chief Adviser said, “On behalf of the people and the Government of Bangladesh and on my own behalf, I extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families, and the people of Sri Lanka. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost their loved ones and with all those impacted by this tragic disaster. We wish all the injured a speedy recovery”.

At this difficult time, the people of Bangladesh stand in solidarity with the friendly people of Sri Lanka, Prof Yunus said, adding, “We also remain ready to extend any possible support or assistance that may be required, including cooperation in flood management, search and rescue operations, medical assistance, and other humanitarian needs”.

“Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration,” the Chief Adviser said.
