Two Arrested in Meghalaya for Aiding Osman Hadi Murder Suspects

Indian police in Meghalaya have arrested two individuals, identified as Putti and Sami, for their roles in assisting the prime suspect, Faisal Karim Masud and his accomplice in fleeing Bangladesh following the murder of Sharif Osman bin Hadi.

Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) SN Md Nazrul Islam confirmed the arrests during a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Sunday, noting that the information was obtained through informal communication with the Meghalaya Police.

The investigation revealed a highly organized escape route.

After the killing, Faisal and his accomplice Md Alamgir Sheikh fled Dhaka via CNG and private car to reach Haluaghat in Mymensingh. There, two individuals named Philip and Sanjay assisted them in crossing the border into India.

Once in Meghalaya, they were received by Putti, who handed them over to taxi driver Sami to be transported to Tura.

Law enforcement agencies, including DMP, Detective Branch (DB), Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) began working jointly to identify and arrest those involved following the ‘heinous’ incident, Nazrul said.

Using information from witnesses present at the scene, CCTV footage analysis, open-source intelligence and information technology, police identified the shooter as Faisal, alias Rahul, and his accomplice, motorcycle rider Md Alamgir Sheikh, on the day of the incident.

The law enforcers immediately conducted raids in Savar, Hemayetpur, Agargaon and Narsingdi to arrest the suspects. As part of the continued operation, a DMP team pursued the suspects up to the border areas of Haluaghat in Mymensingh.

To date, 11 individuals have been arrested in Bangladesh, including Faisal’s parents, wife and several associates who helped plan the crime or hide the murder weapons. Six of the detainees have already provided confessional statements in court.

Police have recovered two foreign-made pistols, 52 rounds of ammunition, and the motorcycle used in the attack. Investigators also seized signed cheques worth BDT 218 Crore linked to 53 bank accounts, suggesting a deep-rooted financial motive behind the premeditated killing.

Sharif Osman Hadi was shot in the head during an election campaign event on December 12.

Despite being airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment, he passed away on December 18.

The DMP’s Detective Branch is now leading the intensive investigation, with plans to submit a charge sheet within the next week. Efforts remain underway to extradite the primary suspects from India and ensure all involved face justice.

DMP to Submit Charge Sheet Within 10 Days

The DMP announced on Sunday that the charge sheet for the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, the spokesperson for Inqilab Moncho, is expected to be submitted within the next seven to ten days.

Speaking at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre, Additional Commissioner SN Nazrul Islam emphasized that law enforcement agencies are working at a rapid pace to ensure justice for the "heinous" killing.

In a significant development, the government has decided to process the case under the Speedy Trial Tribunal, aimed at delivering a swift verdict.

"We are working toward that goal with maximum effort from both the state and law enforcement," Nazrul Islam stated, adding that the investigation is nearing its final stages.
