Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated on Saturday that a significant opportunity has emerged for the nation to transition into a 'liberal democratic Bangladesh'.

Speaking at a high-profile meet-and-greet event at Hotel Sheraton in the capital, where newly appointed BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman exchanged greetings with senior journalists, Fakhrul noted that the country is filled with renewed hope.

"People are now hopeful as a scope has been created for building a liberal democratic Bangladesh," Fakhrul remarked, highlighting that Tarique Rahman’s return from London occurred during a critical juncture in the nation's history.

He emphasized that the public, previously inspired by the Chairman’s virtual speeches during his exile, is now looking to his physical presence and leadership to rebuild the country.

The program, which commenced at 11:20 am with a recitation from the Holy Quran, saw Tarique Rahman arrive early to personally visit different tables and exchange pleasantries with editors and media executives.

In his opening address, Fakhrul paid a solemn tribute to the late BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who passed away on December 30, recalling her lifelong struggle for democracy.

He also honored the martyrs of various democratic movements and the July mass uprising, crediting their sacrifices for paving the way toward the restoration of democratic rights in Bangladesh.
