Addressing a poignant gathering of families affected by enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday called for national vigilance against any conspiracies aimed at derailing Bangladesh’s democratic transition.

During the event, jointly organized by Amra BNP Poribar and Mayer Daak, at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center, Rahman expressed his party's commitment to restraint and patience, even in the face of what he characterized as "controversial roles" played by the current Election Commission.

He emphasized that as a responsible political entity, the BNP intends to prioritize stability and democratic progress over immediate grievances.

“Though it is painful to say, we have recently witnessed some controversial roles and positions taken by the Election Commission. Even then, as a responsible political party, we want to demonstrate patience,” Tarique said.

Tarique Rahman paid deep tribute to the activists and citizens who suffered during the years of anti-fascist struggle, noting that the BNP never retreated or adopted a "clandestine posture" despite systemic repression.

"In the same family, if one brother was forcibly disappeared, another stepped forward to take his place," he remarked, highlighting the uncompromising resilience of his party’s grassroots. He asserted that a party with such a dedicated following cannot be suppressed by propaganda or conspiracy.

A central theme of his address was the moral and state obligation toward the families of those missing or killed.

The BNP Chairman reiterated a long-standing pledge that if his party forms a government with the people's mandate, it will honor these martyrs by naming major roads and state institutions after them.

He argued that the state must extend maximum support to these bereaved families to build a truly "humane and accountable" nation.

Tarique Rahman concluded by warning that certain quarters are attempting to manufacture controversy to obstruct the democratic path, urging all pro-democracy forces to remain alert and prevent any efforts to undermine the upcoming electoral process.

“Those who are trying, using various pretexts, to create controversy and once again ruin the democratic path must not be allowed to succeed,” he added.
