In a poignant ceremony marking International Women’s Day 2026, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia was posthumously honored with the "Best Indomitable Woman in Advancing Democracy" award.
The prestigious accolade was presented by President Mohammed Shahabuddin to Barrister Zaima Rahman, the granddaughter of the late leader and daughter of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka on Sunday.
The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs bestowed this honor in recognition of Begum Khaleda Zia’s steadfast leadership in the struggle to restore democracy and her enduring contributions to safeguarding the country’s democratic processes.
Barrister Zaima Rahman, a UK-trained lawyer, attended the event as a special guest alongside her mother, Dr. Jobaida Rahman, accepting the recognition on behalf of her family.
In addition to the award for the late Prime Minister, the government recognized five other women for their exceptional resilience and achievements across various sectors:
Nurun Nahar Akter: Honored for achievements in economic empowerment.
Bobita Khatun: Recognized for success in the field of education and employment.
Nur Banu Kabir: Awarded in the successful mother category.
Shamla Begum: Honored for overcoming trauma related to violence and successfully rebuilding her life.
Afroza Yasmin: Recognized for her notable contributions to social development.
The event, which served as a focal point for the nation's Women's Day celebrations, highlighted the government's commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women.
Dr. Jobaida Rahman, speaking at the event, emphasized that the advancement of women is essential for national progress, stating, "When women move forward, the nation moves forward."
