Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has resigned from his roles as Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and as Minister for Local Government and Rural Development after being officially named as the party's nominee for the upcoming presidential election.

The announcement of his resignation was confirmed by BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, who addressed reporters shortly after emerging from a meeting of the party's Standing Committee members and senior leadership.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi informed the media that Mirza Fakhrul had already formally tendered his resignations from both his party post and his cabinet portfolio.

The stepping-down of the veteran politician followed an earlier official declaration made by BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who formally presented Fakhrul as the party's contender in the presidential race.

The 78-year-old leader had continuously served as the BNP’s secretary general since 2016.
