Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the president-elect of Bangladesh, is set to formally assume office as the country’s 23rd President through an oath-taking ceremony at the Bangabhaban on Friday.

The ceremony will be held at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban at 7:30 pm, with the Acting President, Prime Minister, Chief Justice, Cabinet members, foreign dignitaries and senior civil and military officials expected to be in attendance.

The oath will mark the formal beginning of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s tenure as president following his election by lawmakers on Thursday.

A former secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir won the presidential contest against Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmad.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir received 255 votes in the parliamentary election, while Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmad, the candidate supported by the 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, secured 88 votes.

The election was held during a special session of Parliament from 2 pm to 5 pm on Thursday.

Of the 349 lawmakers listed as voters, 343 participated in the ballot.

Following the conclusion of the election, the Election Commission formally confirmed Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s victory by issuing a gazette under Section 11 of the Presidential Election Act, 1991, declaring him elected as president.

The oath-taking ceremony at Bangabhaban will therefore complete the constitutional process that began with Thursday’s parliamentary vote, formally installing Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as Bangladesh’s 23rd President.
