The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has received specific allegations that former adviser and NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan laundered approximately 13 billion Taka (13,000 crore Taka) to various countries.
Additionally, he faces allegations of acquiring assets in Portugal, Dubai, Singapore, Australia, and Swiss banks through massive money laundering. The agency has decided to launch a formal investigation into these allegations.
When totaling the financial irregularities and transaction figures mentioned in the received complaints, the amount stands at around 13,000 crore Taka.
Sources indicate that the largest portion involves the alleged laundering of 11,000 crore Taka to Dubai, Singapore, Australia, and Switzerland.
The remaining allegations are centered around financial transactions involving appointments to city corporation administrator and other positions, projects, tenders, and bribery.
Earlier on September 2, the ACC initiated corruption investigations against four individuals, including Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan.
The inquiry outlined allegations of various irregularities and corruption, including syndication in recruitment, transfers, and procurement within the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
These details were shared with journalists on Sunday (September 13) by Tanzir Ahmed, assistant director of the agency's public relations department, at the ACC head office.
He stated that specific complaints of corruption, irregularities, and money laundering have been filed against former adviser Asif Mahmud.
During his tenure as adviser, allegations of financial transactions include those related to appointments in the Dhaka North City Corporation, deputy commissioner (DC) postings, tender allocations, transfers, and promotions across various city corporations and the Ministry of Local Government.
Furthermore, he faces accusations of embezzling funds by inflating project costs in rural infrastructure development, bridge construction, the Saidabad water treatment plant, and Sheikh Russel mini-stadium projects.
He also noted that allegations of laundering massive amounts of money to build assets in Portugal, Dubai, Singapore, Australia, and Swiss banks are under scrutiny.
Additionally, the ACC official stated that after verifying allegations of controlling contracting syndicates, lobbying for bribery, and abusing power against Asif Mahmud's father, APS, and personal assistant, these matters have been incorporated into the ongoing investigation.
