Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Grigoryevich Khozin said that the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is expected to supply 300 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the national grid by next month.

The Russian envoy made the disclosure during a courtesy meeting with Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Administrator Md Fazlul Hoque at the FBCCI office in Gulshan on Wednesday afternoon.

He said work is currently underway to address technical issues at the power plant, with nearly 4,000 Russian experts and engineers engaged in the process.

During the meeting, Khozin also agreed to jointly establish a Russia-Bangladesh Business Council to strengthen trade, investment and broader economic cooperation between the two countries.

He further said Russia is planning to host a Russia-Bangladesh Business Forum in Moscow to facilitate direct interaction between businesses from the two countries. A formal announcement regarding the forum is expected at the meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission, scheduled to take place in Dhaka in early November.

The proposed business forum is aimed at creating greater opportunities for direct communication and business partnerships between Bangladeshi and Russian traders.

To boost bilateral trade, FBCCI Administrator Fazlul Hoque urged Russia to place greater emphasis on Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector alongside other emerging areas of potential cooperation.
