Bangladesh and the United States have signed a strategic agreement on civil nuclear cooperation, marking a new milestone in bilateral engagement regarding the peaceful application of nuclear technology.

Prime Minister’s Adviser for Science and Technology Rehan Asad executed the agreement on behalf of Bangladesh, while US Secretary Jacob Helberg signed on behalf of the United States on September 25, according to a statement released by the BNP media cell on its verified Facebook page.

The accord follows a recent visit by US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor, during which Washington formally presented a proposed memorandum of understanding concerning civil nuclear collaboration with Bangladesh.

Earlier on August 3, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam stated that Bangladesh views the US proposal on civil nuclear cooperation positively, emphasizing that any engagement with Washington would be evaluated on whether it serves the national interests of the country.

She noted that the government maintains a "positive" stance and that any bilateral framework with the United States will be pursued strictly on the basis of Bangladesh's national interest.
