
Many of the victims of Chawkbazar fire hailed from some villages of Nateshwar union under Sonaimuri upazila in Noakhali district. People of the whole area were mourning with tears in their eyes.
Many people still do not know whether their relatives are alive or not. Two brothers Masud Rana and Raju were killed in the devastating fire who were the inhabitants of Ghoshkamta village under Nateshwar union. Uncle of the deceased confirmed the death after identifying the bodies at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Besides there were confirmation about the death of Shahadat Hossain Hira of Bot Toli village, Anwar Hossain Manju and Nasir Uddin of Mirza Nagar village of the same union. Many are still missing said the relatives.
Locals said, several hundred people of Nateshwar union are associated with business at Chawkbazar and adjacent areas. They also said that they are not able to communicate with many of them.
The administration has said that 67 people were killed in the yesterday’s devastating fire. But the non-government sources said the death toll has risen to 78.
The dead bodies hand over activities began in the afternoon from Dhaka Medical College Hospital. So far 40 dead bodies were handed over to the relatives. Of them most of the people hailed from Noakhali.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital forensic chief Dr. Sohel Mahmud said the dead bodies which could not be identified due to severe burning will be identified through DNA tests.
In this regard Member of Parliament from Noakhali-2 constituency Alhaj Morshed Alam said, the fire at Chawkbazar is more devastating than the fire of Nimtali. I think that the chemical factory and warehouse should not be kept in the area.
He said, the government has to take steps in this regard immediately. I will place the matter in the parliament session for discussion.
