Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said, to witness the speech of March 7 at Racecourse ground (Suhrawardy Udyan) some of us rushed with mosquito net sticks and some others with bamboos. I went there with the stick that I used for fixing the mosquito net. I feel glad to think that I was among the lakhs of people.
He said this in a discussion of Independence and National Day at the Nirbachan Bhaban at Agargaon in the capital on Tuesday.
About his preparation for joining the liberation war the CEC said, I will say something from my life. That does not mean that I am trying to glorify myself. Basically I want to say, the youths during 1971 played at least some kind of role to attain the independence from their own position.
KM Nurul Huda said, parliament session was suspended on March 3, 1971. A cricket match was scheduled in Dhaka stadium. After that declaration by Yahya the whole country burst into anger. My practical examination in Dhaka University was scheduled to hold. We also came down to the streets leaving our examinations.
He said, on March 7 we went to the Racecourse ground along with sticks of mosquito nets, bamboos. In the night I asked one of my teacher that Bangabandhu has given direction now what can we do? My teacher said, Dhaka is not safe for anybody, you rather go to the village.
The CEC said, I started for the village along with a friend of Faridpur. When we reached at the village we saw all youths, farmers, workers-all were in preparation for war. With our will power we began to receive training for war holding bamboo sticks as rifles. Basically at that time all of the countrymen were war fighters, even river-canals, trees were also for the independence. They (Pakistani invader forces) did not know swimming. As a result they could not cross the rivers. They even could not get on trees. But our guerilla force members even could make attack on them sitting on palm trees. Thus the whole liberation war turned into a public war.
